Study Guide

The following pages provide an overview of the main elements of the Tabernacle with links to more in-depth information and videos. Learning about the symbolism of the Tabernacle and our modern-day Temples can increase your understanding of the Temple ordinances and the atonement of Jesus Christ.

We encourage you to study these materials in anticipation of your Stake's Tabernacle Experience. YSA Trainers and Youth Guides can increase their knowledge and confidence by learning more about the subject they will be teaching.

We wish to acknowledge and thank Daniel Smith of Scripture Central, for the numerous videos he produced that are featured in this Study Guide.

The Tabernacle

The Tabernacle was established as a central place of worship for the Israelites after their exodus from Egypt. It served as a portable earthly dwelling place of God and symbolized our pathway back to His presence and our need for a savior.

“There are roots that go back to the ancient tabernacle and there’s a consistency over time of what Heavenly Father is trying to teach us, and the way he’s trying to teach us. Visitors are having a spiritual experience with the very foundational principles and covenants of holy temples in a way that many have never had before.”

         - Elder Kevin Pearson, General Authority Seventy.

The Brazen Serpent

A means of healing for the children of Israel who had been bitten by poisonous serpents. Symbolic of looking to Christ, who is the Healer of our souls.

The Camp of Israel

The Tabernacle was placed in the center of the camp, and the 12 tribes pitched their tents around it. The doors of the tents faced the Tabernacle.

Tabernacle Coverings

Four layers that spanned the tent of the Tabernacle, each symbolic of Jesus Christ and His covering of our shortcomings.

The Tabernacle Gate

This was the only entrance into the Tabernacle, symbolic of how Jesus Christ is the only way back to God's presence.

The Altar of Sacrifice

It is here that the Israelites offered up the firstlings of their flocks to the Lord. Sacrifice pointed them to the future sacrifice of the Only Begotten Son of God.

The Laver of Water

Here, the Priests purified themselves by washing their hands and feet before and after sacrifices. Water is symbolic of Jesus Christ, who is the Living Water.

The Holy Place

The first room in the tent, this room contains the Table of Shewbread, the Menorah, and the Altar of Incense. Each point to Jesus Christ as the bread of life, the light of the world, and our advocate with the Father.

The Holy of Holies

The final room in the Tabernacle, containing the Ark of the Covenant. This room represents God's presence, and the mercy He offers His children.
